Why business owners keep personal insurance with the same broker

When you own a business, the line between work and home gets blurry. Your truck hauls tools on weekdays and the boat on weekends. You keep invoices and equipment in the garage. Your family depends on the business, and the business depends on you.

Having one broker look at both sides helps catch the gaps that fall between policies. A homeowners policy usually offers only limited coverage for business property and often excludes business liability. A personal auto policy may not cover a truck used mostly for work. These are the kinds of questions we ask when we review your personal coverage.

The main personal coverages

  • Home and renters insurance: covers your house or apartment, your belongings and your personal liability. Earthquake coverage is a separate policy, through the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) or a private carrier, and flood is usually excluded and needs its own policy too.
  • Auto and recreational: covers cars, pickups, motorcycles, boats, RVs and ATVs. Since January 1, 2025, California requires minimum liability limits of $30,000/$60,000/$15,000, and many drivers choose higher limits.
  • Life insurance: term or permanent coverage to replace income, pay debts and, for owners, help a business continue.

How we review your personal coverage

We start with what you own and who depends on you. Then we look at your current policies for common gaps:

  • Liability limits that are lower than what you could lose in a lawsuit
  • Belongings insured at actual cash value when you expected replacement cost
  • Wind or hail deductibles you didn’t know you had
  • Vehicles, trailers or equipment used for business on a personal policy
  • Life insurance that no longer matches your income, debts or business

We compare options from multiple carriers and explain the trade-offs. Coverage starts only when a carrier approves it and confirms it in writing.

What to have ready for a personal quote

A little information up front makes quotes more accurate and comparisons easier:

  • Your current declarations pages, so we can compare limits and deductibles side by side
  • For a home: the year built, square footage, roof age and any updates to the roof, plumbing, wiring or heating
  • For vehicles: VINs, drivers and how each vehicle is used, including any business use
  • For life insurance: who depends on your income, major debts and any business agreements that involve you

Where personal and business coverage meet

Some risks belong on a business policy, not a personal one. If you run your business from home, a business owners policy or a home business endorsement may be needed. If your vehicle is titled to the business or carries crew and tools, ask about commercial auto. We’ll help you sort out which policy should cover what.

FAQ

Personal insurance questions

Is it worth bundling home and auto?

Often, yes. Many carriers offer a multi-policy discount, and having both with one carrier can simplify claims when one event affects both, such as a tree falling on your car in the driveway. We’ll compare bundled and separate options.

A personal umbrella adds liability limits above your home and auto policies. It’s worth considering if you own a home, have teenage drivers or have assets to protect. Most umbrella carriers require certain minimum limits on your underlying policies.

Yes. We help families in California with home, renters, auto, recreational and life insurance whether or not they own a business.

At least once a year, and whenever something changes: a new home, a remodel, a new driver, a new vehicle, a marriage, a baby or a change in your business. Changes can affect both your coverage and your premium.
