Insurance by industry: how it works

On this page

Why insurance differs from one industry to the next

Two businesses with the same headcount and revenue can pay very different premiums because the work itself creates different risk. A tech company’s biggest exposure is a data breach; a manufacturer’s is a workplace injury or product-liability claim; a restaurant’s is a slip-and-fall or liquor-liability event. Carriers rate each industry based on the claims patterns they see, which is why a policy built around your industry’s actual risks costs less and covers more than a generic one.

What nearly every industry needs, and what changes

Most California employers start from the same core: general liability, workers’ compensation and commercial property. What changes by industry is the specialized coverage layered on top — cyber liability for tech firms, product liability for manufacturers, liquor liability for restaurants, professional liability for consultants and attorneys. The industry pages on this site walk through exactly which coverages apply to your business and why.

Certificates and compliance across industries

Every industry has its own certificate-of-insurance expectations. Construction clients ask for proof of workers’ comp and builders risk before a job starts. Enterprise tech buyers want evidence of cyber and E&O coverage before signing an MSA. Healthcare facilities need malpractice certificates for credentialing. We handle all of these and issue same-day certificates regardless of the industry.

If your industry isn't listed

The pages here cover the industries we hear from most, but we work with many other California employers. If your business doesn’t fit neatly into one of these categories, reach out — we’ll review your operations and put together a coverage program tailored to what you actually do.

How to use these industry pages

Start with the industry that best describes your business. Each page lists the coverages businesses like yours usually need, explains what drives your premium, and covers the certificates and compliance requirements specific to your sector. If you operate across multiple industries, start with the one that represents the largest share of your revenue.

FAQ

Industry insurance questions

What is a class code and why does it matter?

What is a class code?
A class code describes the type of work your employees do, and carriers use it to price workers’ compensation and general liability. Different industries and job functions have different codes, and accurate classification is essential for fair pricing.

Can one policy cover multiple business activities?
Yes. If your company operates across multiple industries — for example, a firm that does both construction and property management — your policy can cover all operations. Payroll and revenue are typically split across the relevant class codes.

Do larger contracts require higher insurance limits?
Usually, yes. Enterprise clients, government agencies and franchise brands each set minimum limits. It’s common to see requirements of $2 M–$10 M depending on the contract size and industry. An umbrella policy is the most cost-effective way to meet higher limits.

Can an independent broker help with multiple lines?
Yes. An independent broker can compare carriers across all your coverage lines and place them together or separately, whichever gives you the best combination of coverage and pricing.

Do these pages apply to businesses outside the listed metro areas?
Yes. The guidance applies to businesses across California, and we work with employers in every part of the state. The metro-area pages focus on local market conditions, but coverage requirements are the same statewide.

One broker for your whole business.

Most local agencies handle either business insurance or group benefits. We handle both, so your coverage, certificates and renewals stay in one place.

Workers' compensation

Required in California for employers with a set number of employees. Covers medical bills and lost wages for work injuries.

Liability and commercial auto

General liability, commercial auto, property and umbrella coverage, plus the certificates your general contractors ask for.

Employee benefits

Group health, dental, vision, life and disability options for growing employers.

Personal insurance

Your business matters. Your home does too.

We also handle home, auto and life insurance, so you can protect what matters most on and off the job, with the same broker.

Need a certificate of insurance?

Send us the requirements from your contract, lease or credentialing packet, including the certificate holder, additional insured and waiver of subrogation, so we can review your request.
